Aspects of Synchronous & Asynchronous Learning

Advantages of:

Synchronous Learning                                          Asynchronous Learning

-Semblance of face-to-face Instruction                  - Flexible environment

-Real time feedback                                               -Self Paced

-Immediate access to Instructor                             -Communication and collaboration embraced

-Real time sharing of knowledge                           -Course material available on website

-Better Quiz performance                                       -Sense of community

-Increase student engagement                                -Increased collaboration

-Instructor led learning

-Preferred for online use

Disadvantages of:

Synchronous Learning                                  Asynchronous Learning

-Not anytime, anywhere learning                    -No control of use of notes on quizzes

-Set time and date for class meeting                -No control of time

-Polling necessary for measuring                     -Delay in feedback

-Comprehension                                               -Possibly low student motivation

Difference in Facilitation Strategies:

Synchronous Learning                               Asynchronous Learning

-Chat rooms                                                  -Online discussion groups

-Audio/Video conferencing                          -CD-Rom

-Two way live satellite                                 -Web CT

-Embedded ongoing assessment                   -Blackboard

-Podcast                                                        -E-mail

-Webcast                                                      -Social Network

Difference Between Facilitators and Learners:

Synchronous Learning                              Asynchronous Learning

-Facilitator & learner online                       -Flexibility of login
simultaneously

-More interaction of facilitator/learner      -Facilitator monitors activity

-Audio/Video lectures                               -Lecture notes

Summary of Selected Asynchronous Delivery Medium

Why this mode:
Team C chose this mode, the blog, because it was the most user friendly and offered the better organization for our topic. The use of the blog will allow for others to add information, make suggestions, or ask questions regarding the content shown.

Why choice is appropriate:
This choice is appropriate because it allows for linking to other topics and embedding of multimedia tools. These can be added by others as well as the original creators/designers. The information can be updated and added to with ease by the users.

How this delivery mode can be applied:

This mode of delivery can be applied to our teaching environment easily as a resource. It can also be changed in content to relate to any subject. The tool will afford the learner the opportunity to add information, make suggestions, or ask questions. It will also increase the collaboration between the learner and instructor and the learner to learner.

Explanation of topic in synchronous medium :
A synchronous medium that would prove to be useful would be instant messaging (IM). Instant messaging would give the learner instant feedback and immediate access to the instructor. This synchronous medium would give the learner the semblance of face-to-face instruction. It is very relative for the visual learner. This medium will help guide the learner in a successful experience with distance learning
